Late submissions and approval of continuous assessments, errors in computation and even manipulation of continuous assessments scores are some causes of the poor performance of students. This project is to provide a system that will enable faster and error-free computation, submission and approval of continuous assessments, to reach the Dean and other offices thereby creating a network between lecturers, departments and faculties. The methodology used is the structural analysis and design method, the database system is the MYSQL database and the programming language used is PHP and HTML. The result of this project is that these issues will be eliminated and a healthy learning environment where student can perform at their very best will be created.





Continuous assessment is of two types; internal and external. The internal has to do with test, assignment or examination conducted at different period within a semester in and academic year while the external has to do with external examinations done outside the higher institutions. We will be concentrating on the internal method of continuous assessment in our higher institutions, the issues associated with it and how it can be improved.

In most higher institutions in Nigeria, the manual methods of continuous assessment computation and submission between lecturers and school authorities is more popular. These results go through some amount of scrutiny and clarification before they are approved to ensure the right data was inputted. During the process of computation, mistakes can be made which if not corrected can lead to errors in the published result. 

These mistakes can be avoided and the continuous assessment computed faster and with little or no errors, since the continuous assessment data are generated and recorded automatically as students go through the courses and take the assigned tests, quizzes and exams.

This problem can be solved using an automated continuous assessment system which makes use of the internet or network that enables lectures compute and submit results in the minimum possible time. In the event of any mistake, re-computation won’t be necessary since the system automatically computes it, only the mistakes will be corrected and the system takes care of the rest. The system will also come with a notification area that signifies each party that results have been submitted and approved respectively. Approval of results too will be as easy as possible because the faculty heads only need to see the results and their computation from their own system and verify that it is complete. 

Using this system, lecturers will have more time to invest in the growth of their students, new courses can be added easily and good educational policies will be generated faster by the school authorities.


Computation and submission of continuous assessments of students for their courses manually, is very tedious and error-prone (for a large number of students). This is one of the reasons students results take longer time before they are released. The school authorities also have to wait until the computation is completed and the results submitted before they can be approved.


The objectives of this study are to a system that enables the lecturers compute and submit the continuous assessments of their students faster and on time to the school authorities for approval.

2.Create a database that will enable these continuous assessments be shared between the lecturers and the dean and other offices for verification and approval. 


The project is important because it tackles the delay in the computation, submission and approval of continuous assessments of students and also the rise in manipulation of results. 

The consequences of not implementing my recommendation is that there will be a rise in the delay of results approval and students will lost motivation to perform excellently in their studies.


Using the University of Port Harcourt as a case study, this study covers the way lecturers compute and submit the continuous assessments of students undergoing their courses and the process and time it takes for the results to be approved.


The study is limited to the University of Port Harcourt and how its manual system of result computation and submission can be done automatically using a well-designed E-learning system.


E-LEARNING: A type of learning that is delivered over the internet. This type of learning happens outside of the classroom and the materials are delivered via an LMS.

LMS (Learning Management System): This is software used for creating, managing and delivering E-learning content as well as communication between the lecturers and the students and also for tracking the students’ performance.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT: A practical exercise carried out to grade students and measure the extent to which specified educational objectives have been achieve.

EDUCATION: A process which affect a change in an individual’s behavior leading to functionalism to self and the society at large.

ASSIGNMENT: An ability which may be oral or practical given to learners by the lecturers to reinforce or access the rate of learning.

TEST: An activity or exercise administered to a learner to measure skill ability knowledge or ideas (potentials).

QUIZ: A test of knowledge, asking someone questions to prove his knowledge of a particular subject.
